MadFriars' Daily Farm Report: September 4

Two teams remain as the MidWest and Texas League playoffs get underway. Both Joe Ross and Matt Wisler pitched excellent but only one got the win.

San Antonio Missions 1 – Corpus Christi Hooks 2 (11 innings)

Key Statistics RHP Matt Wisler 6.1 IP, 2 H, ER, 3 BB, 4s K; RHP Leonel Campos 2 IP, 2 BB, 3 Ks; CF Rico Noel 1-3, 3B, RS, BB; 1B Tommy Medica 2-4, RBI BB.

Prospect Watch: The Texas League playoffs started with a thud as the offense couldn't carry their own weight as the Mission's fell 2-1. The biggest issue was a 1-13 mark with runners in scoring position. Matt Wisler backed up ESPN's pronouncement that he is now the top pitching prospect in the Padres system with 6.1 great innings. The only run he allowed came with Wisler out of the game, as a one out walk in the seventh came around to score as the reliever allowed two singles to score the run… Mission's blew a great opportunity in the first after Noel started the game with a triple. Unfortunately he was thrown out at the plate on a bang bang play.

Fort Wayne TinCaps 5 – Bowling Green Hot Rods 1

Key Statistics RHP Joe Ross 6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4s K; DH Mallex Smith 2-5, 2 RS, 2 SB; RF Hunter Renfroe 2-3, sac

Prospect Watch: Fort Wayne had lost six of the last seven games against Bowling Green, and needed a strong pitching performance. They got it from Joe Ross. Tyson's little brother had been 2-6, with a 4.96 ERA in the second half of the season. If that was Ross' giving the TinCaps one last quality start before the off-season, it was a heck of a performance. Ross had 11 groundball outs and did not allow a ball to escape the infield, a basehit or an out, until the last out of the fifth. The only other ball to reach the outfield (single) saw the hitter thrown out at second.

. Tomorrow: MWL ERA champion Zach Eflin will try to clinch the series for the TinCaps. While the Mission's will try to avoid going down two games to none as they turn to knuckleballer Eddie Bonine
