Initially assigned to the rookie-level Gulf Coast League, the 6-foot-3, 205-pounder allowed just two earned runs in 12 innings across five games. Mayers fanned 13 and walked six while holding opponents to a .143 average.
Moved up to Peoria of the Class-A Midwest League on July 31, Mayers made his first start on Sunday, August 4, at home. The 21-year-old went 4 2/3 innings, yielding just one run on five hits and no walks. Mayers fanned three.
On the eve of his second MWL outing on Saturday night, August 10, I offer the following interview, held just after Mayers' first Peoria start. In it, the Ohio native recaps his first two months as a professional pitcher.
The final Peoria interview ahead will be with outfielder Charlie Tilson. Memphis, Springfield and St. Louis subjects will follow, as well.
