In a very quiet 2013 Major League Baseball All-Star Game Tuesday night at New York’s Citi Field, four of the St. Louis Cardinals six representatives took the field in game action. Still, the National League fell to the American League by a 3-0 score.
Former Mets star and starting right fielder Carlos Beltran had a fourth-inning ground-ball single against Felix Hernandez of the Mariners. It was the Senior Circuit’s lone hit through six innings.
The other Cardinals starter was catcher Yadier Molina, who was 0-for-2 batting from the sixth spot in the order.
Matt Carpenter entered the game for starting second baseman Brandon Phillips in the fifth and also went 0-for-2. His ninth inning at-bat was especially irritating to NL and Cardinals fans as it appeared all three strikes called were low in the zone.
Allen Craig had a night to remember even if he did not get a hit. He came to the plate against All-Star MVP Mariano Rivera in the legendary closer’s final All-Star appearance. Leading off the eighth, Craig lined out hard to the left fielder.
Adam Wainwright opted out of his opportunity to pitch, opening his spot on the NL roster for the late addition of Edward Mujica. The Cardinals closer warmed up late in the contest but was not called upon to pitch.
The National League’s defeat means the American League will enjoy the home-field advantage for the 2013 World Series.
These six Cardinals - and the rest of their teammates - still have a lot of work ahead to get to the point where it will be relevant to them, however. With 69 games remaining and a slim one-game divisional lead, their second half begins at Busch Stadium on Friday night against San Diego.
