With Opening Day for all three short-season clubs this week, The Cardinal Nation is ready. 2013 promises the most comprehensive local team coverage of the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system in our site’s history – an end-to-end, first-hand view of the organization from top to bottom that is available nowhere else.
This season, we are welcoming two new team reporters, Robert Davidson in State College and Curtis Carden in Johnson City. They join returning Gulf Coast League Cardinals writer Paul Ivice in providing eyewitness news from all three of the St. Louis Cardinals short-season clubs, which have assembled in Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Florida.
A native of the Hampton, Tenn. Area, Carden has three years of experience as a sportswriter. He started at The Erwin Record, an award-winning weekly newspaper based in Erwin, Tenn, and continues there today. Curtis also is a contributing writer for other publications in the northeast Tennessee area, including the Elizabethton Star and Johnson City Press, along with others.
A Cleveland, Ohio native, Davidson is covering the State College Spikes for the 2013 season. He attends Penn State University as a Print Journalism major in the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism and is a sports reporter for the Penn State student newspaper, The Daily Collegian. Robert began focusing on a career in sports journalism as a junior in high school after Tommy John surgery effectively ended his playing career.
Davidson, Carden and Ivice join our four reporters who continue to cover the Cardinals full-season clubs, providing local-based news from every US stop in the system. Along with player features, tips, transactions and injury-based hot news posted immediately throughout the week, these seven reporters will provide subscribers an in-depth analysis of their team’s happenings on the following weekly schedule. Reports will be posted each morning on the following schedule:
Sunday: Johnson City Cardinals Notebook – by Curtis Carden
Monday: Gulf Coast League Cardinals Notebook – by Paul Ivice
Tuesday: Springfield Cardinals Notebook – by Brandon Mahler
Wednesday: Peoria Chiefs Notebook – by Alex Ross
Thursday: Memphis Redbirds Notebook – by Corey Carmichael
Friday: Palm Beach Cardinals Notebook – by Juan Dorado
Saturday: State College Spikes Notebook – by Robert Davidson
Full rosters for all of these clubs can be found here at The Cardinal Nation. Click on “Minor League Rosters” in the red area directly underneath the site logo and select the team. The Roster Matrix at The Cardinal Nation blog is being refreshed and indicates all 284 players in the Cardinals system by level and position. You can also check on the status of all 41 players drafted by the Cardinals in 2013 there.
To keep on top of daily game results and player stats throughout the entire season, our Minor League Notebooks, written by Leonda Markee, are posted each morning, seven days a week.
We have an additional new member of the staff, John Lopiano. The Brooklyn, New York resident has taken over Pierce Jefferson’s weekly “Around the Major Leagues” articles, which appear here each Monday. We wish Pierce all the best in his new job working for the St. Louis Cardinals and thank him for his past work as our local Memphis reporter as well.
Lopiano received his BA in Journalism & Public Relations from Seton Hall University. While at Seton Hall, John worked as a Media Relations Assistant for the Department of Athletic Communications and was the Assistant Sports Editor for The Setonian, Seton Hall's campus newspaper.
