Another day, another set of St. Louis Cardinals draftees signed to their first professional contracts.
On Wednesday, the organization announced the second group of signees from their 2013 June First-Year Player Draft class of 41 players. Six new recruits joined the initial group of seven, including three from the top 10 rounds.
They are left-handed pitcher Ian McKinney (5th round, Boone HS, Fla.), left-handed pitcher Jimmy Reed (6th round, Maryland), shortstop Chris Rivera (7th round, El Dorado HS, Cal.), outfielder Devante Lacy (24th round, Cedar Valley College), right-handed pitcher Blake McKnight (38th round, Evangel University) and right-handed pitcher Kevin Herget (39th round, Kean University).
A number of additional Cardinals draftees are in the pipeline, however the organization does not make their official announcements until physical examinations are complete.
Top three reportedly agree
Specifically, in addition to the above, two of the club’s first three drafted players have come to terms with the Cardinals, according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com. They are 28th overall pick Rob Kaminsky, a high school left-hander from New Jersey and second rounder Oscar Mercado. The shortstop from Tampa was taken 57th overall.
According to Langosch, Kaminsky will sign for $1.7853 million, which is equivalent to his pick value. Mercado was lured away from his commitment to Florida State University by a signing bonus of $1.5 million compared to the pick value of $971,400.
On Tuesday, Baseball America disclosed the Cardinals’ first selection, left-hander Marco Gonzales, also came to terms with the organization for a below-pick value deal.
The Cardinals are expected to bring these three top picks - Gonzales, Kaminsky and Mercado - to St. Louis for their physicals, signing ceremonies and media introductions next week, potentially on Tuesday.
