Tampa Bay third baseman takes home second Scout.com Player of the Week award as the regular season…
Scout.com Player of the Week: Evan Longoria
The Tampa Bay Rays third baseman has actually hit safely in nine of his last 10, but from May 6 through Mothers Day, the sixth-year infielder was particularly tough to get out, going 13-for-28 with eight runs scored, five doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI -- nearly half of his season total of 26, and the most among all Major Leaguers over the past seven days.
Before last week, Longoria was hitting a solid .301, but after his tear, he's now hitting a robust .333. He also increased his on-base percentage by a full .037 points to .403 and ratcheted his OPS up from .892 to 1.012. In fact, Longoria's 1.496 OPS and .964 slugging percentage over the week paced all big leaguers, as did his 27 total bases. His .531 OBP was tied for fourth and his .464 batting average was tied for fifth.
Longoria went 4-for-10 with runners in scoring position over the last seven days, socking one home run and one double while driving in seven of his 11 RBI in those situations.
During the past week, Longoria's Rays ripped off five straight wins after two close losses at home to Toronto, with Longoria scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on May 9, starting a two-run rally in the bottom of the third on May 10 against San Diego that kicked off a 6-3 comeback win and socked a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth the very next day in an 8-7 victory.
