Following Thursday’s game, the St. Louis Cardinals optioned relievers Victor Marte and Eduardo Sanchez to Triple-A Memphis and reassigned pitcher Michael Wacha to minor league camp. The moves were confirmed by the players, but the club has not made an official announcement. Update: The Cardinals made the moves official on Friday morning.
Wacha, 21, threw two innings and collected the win on Thursday. Manager Mike Matheny called the right-hander “impressive” and praised him for how he worked out of a ninth-inning jam that began with a double off “his third-best pitch.” Wacha finished his first major league camp with 11 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out 13 and walking just one.
Sanchez, 24, is a hard thrower hampered by control lapses. The right-hander did not issue a walk in his first five outings of the spring, four scoreless, before giving out three free passes in his last two frames. He allowed three earned runs in 6 1/3 spring innings.
Marte, 32, has had an up and down spring. In six appearances, the right-hander allowed six runs, three earned, in 4 1/3 innings of work. Marte fanned three and walked one.
After the moves, the Cardinals now have 45 players assigned to major league camp – 35 members of the 40-man roster and 10 non-roster invitees. 21 are pitchers with 24 position players. Three of the 45 remain temporarily away for the World Baseball Classic; Carlos Beltran (Puerto Rico), Mitchell Boggs (USA) and Yadier Molina (Puerto Rico).
Wacha, Sanchez and Marte will join over 160 peers currently participating in minor league camp. (link to roster details for subscribers)
