The Surprise Saguaros' 2012 Arizona Fall League season got underway on Tuesday as they fell to the Peoria Javelinas 5-2 on the road.
Kansas City prospect Justin Marks started the contest for Surprise. The southpaw held the Javelinas hitless with two walks and two strikeouts over the first three frames.
However, Peoria scored twice in the fourth off Red Sox right-hander Brock Huntzinger in his first of two innings on the bump. Huntzinger took the loss as the Javelinas were never headed.
Fellow Red Sox Chris Martin matched both the four hits that Huntzinger allowed and his results as he yielded a tally in each of his two-inning stint. Ryan Pressly was the third Boston prospect to take the mound when he tossed the eighth. The righty gave up an unearned run on a single and a subsequent error that capped Peoria's scoring.
Right-hander Carson Smith (Seattle) picked up his first win by holding Surprise to a single hit and a free pass in the fourth and fifth. Smith was the second of six Peoria pitchers in the game.
O'Neill led off and went 0-for-2 with two free passes and a strikeout as the designated hitter. One of O'Neill's base-on-balls produced his team's final tally as he worked a free pass with one out in the eighth. He advanced to third when Wong reached on a throwing error by the Javelinas' catcher and scored on a sac fly to center by left fielder Brian Fletcher (KC).
Wong was hitless in four at-bats as Surprise's second baseman, including grounding into a double play. He also reached base in the first inning via a fielding error by the shortstop, then stealing second base before being left stranded there.
Wednesday's game: vs. Peoria, 2:35 pm CT (12:35 pm GMT). Springfield's Boone Whiting will be making the start for Surprise.
Like six of the other seven Cardinals AFL players, Whiting participated in the organization's instructional league camp in Jupiter, FL before heading to Arizona. He most recently pitched in game action last Tuesday, same day as Surprise's scheduled Thursday starter, Seth Blair.
