Johnson City Cards 2012 Reliever of the Year

Shaban: 2012 33rd round pick from Virginia Tech

Johnson City closer Ronnie Shaban was the top reliever in the Appy League and wins our award, too.

This year, we have chosen 22-year-old Ronnie Shaban as The Cardinal Nation's Relief Pitcher of the Year for Johnson City. His performance withstood comparisons not only to the best on his team but across the entire Appalachian League. No one even came close to approaching his record in saves this season.

John Walter of the Burlington Royals had the second-most saves in the league with nine. The right-hander Shaban almost doubled that with 16. Standing at 6'1" and weighing in at 195 lbs., Shaban proved to be a force to be reckoned with in his first year of pitching in the minor leagues.

Shaban relieved Mike Aldrete in the very first game of the regular season to gain his first save. He pitched a total of 20.2 innings in 20 games. Shaban allowed a total of 19 hits, eight runs (one unearned), seven walks and 31 strikeouts during the 2012 season. He held an ERA of 3.05 and had only one loss to his record.

Although the Cards lost in their third game of the playoffs, Shaban did bring them one saved victory. He did so in the first game against the Burlington Royals. In two innings, he only allowed one hit and had four strikeouts. In the last two games of the playoffs, he did not pitch. The Cards ended their regular season in second place in the Western Division with the third-best record in the league.

Shaban was selected as an Appalachian League Post-Season All-Star for 2012 as relief pitcher as well.

Dixon Llorens and Cesar Aguilar are the only others on the Cardinals who had saves this season. Llorens had a perfect 0.00 ERA through 15.2 IP, while Aguilar saw 28.1 IP, earning a record of 2-1. Several of these players could have also been awarded the Johnson City Cardinals 2012 Relief Pitcher of the Year, but Shaban demonstrated the most consistent results and showed the most potential.
