Xavier Scruggs: The view from the bus

Springfield Cardinals first baseman
Posted Aug 3, 2012

St. Louis Cardinals Double-A first baseman Xavier Scruggs is back with news from Springfield or should I say, from the bus that was taking him and his teammates home.

Earlier today, while on the bus as we are headed to Northwest Arkansas' stadium, we passed a community park where it looked like a father was pitching to his son. The son, who was hitting pitches his father was throwing to him with the biggest smile on his face, reminded me of myself when I was his age. The kid looked like he was 7 or 8 years old and I couldn't help but think about how blessed I am to be able to still play the sport that my parents spent so much time teaching me.

Both my parents put in hours upon hours just teaching me the basics and fundamentals of sports. I remember times when my father would take my brother and me to the batting cages. No matter how frustrated we became when we missed the ball, he always remained under control and continued to motivate us. I can remember my mother taking us to the local little league field and throwing us batting practice. I don't know too many mothers that can even throw a baseball, yet alone strikes.

This blog entry serves as a reminder to those who have ever helped teach, coach, or motivate me that my accomplishments are a result of your relentless hard work and struggle to help me be the best I can be. I know I still have a long way to go but I am thankful for where I am today.

This past week has been a good one. We split 2-2 at Northwest Arkansas and took all three at Little Rock. We have been on the road all week and finally are getting back to Springfield to play starting Friday night.

My patience was really tested this past week because I felt like the umpires had it out for me. I was frustrated about multiple calls. Now, I have never been thrown out of a game and I am a very calm person, but sometimes it takes a lot to remain under control when the umpires miss calls.

I try to remember that they are human and that they make mistakes too, but let's just say this past week I wanted to take a few umpires to get their vision checked. That's all I will say about that. Just letting you guys know that sometimes the Men in Black can really piss us off too.

Also this week, we have been able to catch a lot of the Olympic events on the televisions in the clubhouse because we haven't been taking batting practice on the field. It's too hot for all that! The good thing is that this allows us more time to chill and watch the different events from gymnastics to volleyball to water polo.

My favorite is watching our basketball team. It's pretty fun to see how excited our team gets when we see Team USA competing and winning - at least the guys from the US. Jamie Romak is in his own boat since he's Canadian. He'd probably be a little happier if it was the Winter Olympics. Ha ha. In all seriousness, it's been great since Jamie joined the team. He's another great personality who meshes really well with our team. His dry humor always keeps us entertained.

Right now, it is 1:45 a.m. on the bus ride back to Springfield and our driver is starting to swerve a little bit so I think I'll wrap up this blog before I start getting car-sick or bus-sick. Some guys are watching the movie (Role Models), some guys are listening to music, some are on their iPads and some are asleep. The Latins seem to be fairly quiet in the back so all is good with the Springfield Cardinals on this late night.

Me personally? I'm writing this blog on the notepad in my iPhone and listening to some R&B. Thanks again for reading and make sure you follow me on twitter for the play by play @Xavier_Scruggs.
