The St. Louis Cardinals now have seven players on the 15-day disabled list, with Matt Carpenter the newest arrival.

On Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals learned they had to place infielder/outfielder Matt Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list due to a right oblique strain. His injury was suffered in the first inning of Tuesday night’s game.

In response, the Cardinals purchased the contract of catcher Steven Hill from Triple-A Memphis. The 27-year-old will be in uniform #60 for Wednesday night’s series finale against the San Diego Padres.

Hill
Hill has made starts at catcher, first base, left field and right field for the Redbirds, batting .257 (18-for-70) with four home runs and 11 RBI in 19 games. He missed most of the first month of the season with a foot injury. Hill has been playing well recently as he has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games and homered in back-to-back games last Sunday and Monday (May 20-21).

The 5-foot-11, 200-pounder made his one-game MLB debut with the Cardinals in 2010 and hit a home run in his second career Major League at-bat that August 15 vs. the Cubs. He was outrighted, removed from the 40-man roster that November and went unclaimed. Hill missed a majority of the 2011 season after suffering a knee injury followed by a broken foot.

The Houston, Texas native was the Cardinals 13th round selection (412th player overall) in the 2007 amateur draft from Stephen F. Austin State University.

The Cardinals have disabled five players in the past week, including Jon Jay, Allen Craig, Kyle McClellan, Lance Berkman and Matt Carpenter and they currently have seven players on the disabled list.

Hill’s addition fills the organization’s 40-man roster and he will become the 31st player to appear on the Cardinals 25-man roster in 2012. Memphis is once again one player short.
