Xavier Scruggs: Ready to get back on track

St. Louis Cardinals minor league first baseman Xavier Scruggs reports from Springfield, Missouri. His club is looking to break a losing skid.

It's been an interesting past week here with the Springfield Cardinals. Our team had been doing great until we dropped our last five consecutive games. We just haven't been playing fundamentally sound baseball. For whatever reason we have gotten away from the things that we do best, executing the little things. I'm not concerned one bit because we have so much talent on this team and everyone wants to win more than anything.

After splitting a four-game series with the Tulsa Drillers at home we are now in the middle of an eight-game road trip. It's Thursday the 26th of April and we just lost the first three games of our road trip to the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. I find it funny we start playing poor baseball right when our special assistant to the general manager, the fielding coordinator, and the pitching coordinator all come in town to watch us play. Just reminds me how crazy this game of baseball can be.

Speaking of this crazy game, we had an extra inning contest on Tuesday that seemed never-ending. That whole day was the longest because we had a mandatory team lift that morning at the gym down the street from the hotel. It was nice to get a lift in but right around the seventh inning of the game I think everyone started feeling the effects. Personally I know my whole body started to stiffen up and while playing first base, it took serious amounts of energy just to get in my ready position. I looked around at my teammates during that game as well and everyone just looked dead. I think it was more of a mental thing though because we all knew we had to turn around and play an 11 o'clock game the next day. Needless to say we lost the extra inning game and the morning game the next one, too. However hopes are still very high in this clubhouse.

This week we added another great player to our roster in Kyle Conley, but lost Tommy Pham to a season ending surgery. Kyle adds great hitting and power to our line up. It's going to be great to have him. As a matter of fact, he hit two homers in one game the other day.

After our 11 o'clock game on Wednesday, I needed to take my mind off of the loss so a few of the guys and I played video games back at the hotel. Two-on-two in FIFA12. Tyler Lyons and I put together a strong display of futbol on the PS3 by beating Jose Garcia and Kleininger Teran four games to two in a best-of-seven game series. Hearing them get mad and cuss us out in Spanish was the highlight of my day.

Right now, I'm on the bus headed to Tulsa just after we lost four straight to the Naturals. It is midnight and I think we have an hour to go. A few guys are reading, a couple are sleeping, some are listening to music, a few are on their iPads and four guys are playing cards. No movie is being played on the bus. I imagine the idea was probably shut down by a coach.

Hopefully we can do damage in Tulsa because this losing thing sucks! Until next week!
