Three 2011-drafted pitchers and three returning position players will represent the St. Louis Cardinals at the New York-Penn League All-Star Game.

The St. Louis Cardinals are well-represented on the 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star team, announced Monday. Six members of the Batavia Muckdogs have been invited to suit up for the National League affiliates squad – three pitchers and three position players.

The group of honorees includes starting pitchers Todd McInnis, Seth Maness and Jonathan Cornelius, all drafted this June. Catcher Juan Castillo, second baseman Joey Bergman and first baseman David Medina are returning Cardinals.

The Muckdogs sport three of the 10 NL pitchers, the most of any club. Brooklyn (Mets) leads the way for the NL with four position players chosen.

McInnis
This year’s New York-Penn League All-Star Game will be played on Tuesday, August 16 at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass. with the NL squad taking on their American League counterparts.

McInnis, 23, the Cardinals’ 25th round pick in this June’s draft from Southern Mississippi, is third in the league with his 2.12 ERA. The right-hander has fanned 32 and walked just seven in 46 2/3 innings. McInnis is holding opponents to a collective .208 batting average.

Maness is just short of having enough innings to qualify among the league leaders, but the 22-year-old right-hander’s 0.52 ERA would be first in the NYPL by over a run. His opponent batting average is .163, he averages better than four groundouts to every one fly ball out and has a 27:3 strikeout to walk ratio in 34 2/3 innings. Maness was the Cardinals’ 11th-round draft pick in 2011 from East Carolina.

Bergman
Cornelius’ results should not be judged by his lone win in 11 appearances for the Muckdogs. His 2.85 ERA is ninth in the NYPL. The 23-year-old left-hander has fanned 37 and walked 15 in 41 innings. Cornelius joined the Cardinals from Florida Tech via his selection in the 24th round of his June’s draft.

Bergman, 23, is back for a second year with the Muckdogs and made his second NYPL All-Star Game. His .320 batting average is fifth in the league and his .394 on-base percentage is 12th. Bergman’s OPS of .826 is 15th in the NYPL.

Medina is batting .300, 11th in the NYPL and his .388 OBP is 15th. The 22-year-old’s .472 slugging percentage is 12th in the league and his OPS of .860 is tenth. Medina is tied for third in the NYPL with seven home runs and is third in runs scored with 33.

Castillo
Castillo, 21, is just short of enough plate appearances to qualify among the league leaders, however, his .327 average would place him first among NYPL catchers and fourth among all players. His .455 SLG would be second among league backstops and 16th in the league overall.

Other Muckdogs with strong seasons that likely placed them under consideration include infielder Romulo Ruiz, outfielder Virgil Hill and closer Danny Miranda.

Batavia is currently in fourth place in the Pinckney Division with a record of 24-26. This marks the third time in four years that the Muckdogs have sent at least five players to the All-Star Game. Five Muckdogs were invited in 2008, three in 2009 and six in 2010.
