MLB Draft Scouting Report: Archie Bradley
School: Broken Arrow H.S. (Okla.)
Events Scouted: AFLAC All-American
Given his physique it it comes as no surprise to anyone that Archie Bradley is also an accomplished football player. He's strong, athletic, and physically mature. You won't find better frames for a pitcher in this draft class. Projection is not something to consider here as his present velocity and strength are already outstanding.
Bradley uses his lower half expertly, and because of that his arm action and delivery as a whole appear mostly effortless. He comes straight over the top and finishes with outstanding extension toward the dish. His arm action is very clean and his head stays on line with home plate. Aside from getting on his front side occasionally, this is a young pitcher with highly consistent and clean mechanics.
Bradley stacks up with anyone in this draft class when it comes to pure arm strength. He sits steadily at 93-96 mph, reaching as high as 97-98 mph late last summer and this spring. He does it with relative ease as well. He's primarily a straight four-seam fastball pitcher, but he gets good life through the zone.
The Oklahoma native is also the owner of a plus curveball, and this is a present grade. Thrown at 80-83 mph, Bradley spins a true 12-6 hammer and locates pretty well already. And, when he is locating he can approach being unhittable when he couples this offering with his exploding fastball. The break is late, abrupt, and very hard. He's located well in short stints, but if he can avoid falling in love with it this is a potential plus-plus pitch at the big league level.
He hasn't had much need to use his changeup yet, but the makings of it are still in place. When he does use it, he works at 78-81 mph. He sells it well but shows a distinct lack of feel for it at this stage. With use, given his feel for his other pitches, that figures to change as he's forced to use it more at the professional level.
Total package is the best way to describe Archie Bradley. He has the velocity, the command, the body type, and the quiet swagger that goes along with being an ace. Take his knockout curveball into consideration, and there's very little not to like about this Oklahoma native.
