Third baseman David Freese suffered a fractured left hand when hit by a pitch on Sunday and will be out until mid-late July.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Monday that they have placed third baseman David Freese (left hand fracture) on the 15-day disabled list and activated infielder/outfielder Allen Craig (left groin strain) from the 15-day disabled list.

Freese was injured in the sixth inning yesterday in Atlanta when he was hit by a Scott Linebrink pitch. Craig appeared in two games (0-for-6, sac fly, walk) this past weekend during an injury rehabilitation assignment at Springfield (Double-A). He was batting .313 with one home run and seven RBI in 11 games with the Cardinals before getting injured on April 16.

Update: Freese will have surgery to put a plate in his hand and is expected to be out until mid-late July.
