Interview: Cardinals Prospect Brandon Dickson

Interview: Cardinals Prospect Brandon Dickson

The right-handed starting pitcher impressed in spring camp and is almost ready to make the leap to the majors.

Rarely does a player passed over in all 50 rounds of the June draft make the major leagues, yet that is the door upon which Brandon Dickson is knocking. The 26-year-old has impressed pitching coach Dave Duncan as a ground-ball specialist with a good sinker and breaking ball who keeps the ball in the park.

Along with Lance Lynn and sure winner Kyle McClellan, Dickson was under consideration for the open fifth spot in the rotation this spring but allowed eight runs, six earned, in nine innings of work. Last season, Dickson posted a respectable 137-to-53 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 167 innings for Memphis and was named The Cardinal Nation Starting Pitcher of the Year.

In the interview that follows, held before Dickson was reassigned to minor league camp earlier this week, we discuss his 2010 season and what he is bringing into the 2011 campaign.
