Dustin Mattison (45): Since signing out of the Dominican in 2009, all Martinez has done is produce. In his pro debut, the pitcher went 6-0 in the Dominican Summer League and started out hot in the league this past summer as well. To test his mettle, the Cardinals moved him to the Gulf Coast League to see how he would perform against better competition.

The right-hander barely missed my Top 40 after putting together a pretty impressive North American debut. In 37 innings, he posted an ERA of 1.95 and allowed only a .197 batting average against.

Sort of a mystery man to prospect watchers, here is what Vice President of Player Procurement Jeff Luhnow had to say. “He typically averages 90-91 with his fastball but can run it up to 94 during a game. He has very good 'pitchability' and command of his fastball. His best breaking ball is a slider which can be sharp and he does command it well. He has a curveball too he uses more with lefties. His change is a work in progress but has potential.”

I have been as guilty as anyone of getting overly excited over performances of players in the low levels of minors. But with a projectable frame that will support more growth, Martinez could add zip to his fastball. With that and the foundation of a solid breaking pitch, Martinez is definitely one I will watch in the coming years.

Message board community (34):Bryan Martinez was the Community’s 34th pick this year. He was not on the list last year, though he pitched in the Dominican for the Cards for the first time in 2009.

I’m going to borrow heavily from one of our posters who did a lot of digging on Martinez. (One of the virtues of the community is having a lot of eyeballs and thoughtful people focused on the farm!) Martinez fanned over 13 per 9 innings in the Domincan, with a GB/FB ratio of 2.79. About three dozen pitchers in the rookie ball leagues posted a K/9 ip over 11. Of those three dozen, the second highest GB/FB ratio was 1.70. Martinez has a rare combination of being able to fan guys and make them hit it on the ground when they hit it.

Between the Domincan and the GCL, he threw 73.1 innings, fanning 86 in 2010. He did hit 14 batters, and he threw a dozen wild pitches. The opposition managed only one home run against him. And he was a starting pitcher in 14 of his 15 appearances. He was only 19 last year, and has a thin (6’3”, 172 lb. frame), so he could well put on strength as he progresses. Martinez will be a player to watch next year. - Gagliano

Brian Walton (35): As one would expect, Cardinals Director of International Operations Moises Rodriguez is very familiar with Martinez. Since I haven’t yet seen Martinez pitch, I will share Rodriguez’ view of the talented youngster:

“Martinez’ numbers speak for themselves,” Rodriguez said. “You look at him and he’s kind of a skinny kid at 6-foot-3 and you are surprised at what comes out of his arm. He’s got a killer slider and his fastball sits in the low 90’s.

“His promotion to the GCL was much deserved. He came up here and didn’t do as well as in the Dominican Summer League but you often find when kids from the DR come to the United States the first time, there is a transitional period they go through.

“I know having been exposed about a month to Jupiter, that coming into next spring, it is going to be easier for him. We are looking for big things out of him next year,” Rodriguez explained.
