Red Wings Re-Commit to Run Muckdogs in 2011

In a change in plans, Rochester Community Baseball will be back to operate the Batavia Muckdogs, the St. Louis Cardinals' New York-Penn League affiliate, if it isn't sold first.

Reversing earlier an public statement that they likely would not continue to operate the money-losing Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League for a fourth year, Rochester Community Baseball (RCB) announced Tuesday that it has agreed to again manage the Muckdogs during the 2011 baseball season.

That is, if the team is not sold and relocated first.

The club, perennially among the poorest-attended in the short-season Class A league, has been for sale since late summer. Conversations with several potential suitors are ongoing, the club reports.

In a press release, Brian Paris, President of the Genesee County Baseball Club, the not-for-profit organization that owns the Muckdogs said, "We are appreciative and grateful that the Red Wings see fit to continue running the operation here in Batavia while we pursue a buyer.

"Our hope is that a local sale will occur, or that an individual or company will step forward with an interest in spending substantial sponsorship dollars, allowing the financial picture to improve. A company interested in naming rights, for example, would make a big difference here in Batavia, the way it has in most communities around the country," Paris said.

In each of the past three years, RCB, owner of the Rochester Red Wings of the International League, was awarded a five percent ownership stake in the Muckdogs to be redeemed if the team was sold. That was provided in return for RCB absorbing operating losses that reportedly totaled half a million dollars over the last three years.

Financial terms of the extended agreement between RCB and the Genesee County Baseball Club were not announced.

The Cardinals recently signed a two-year extension of their Player Development Contract with the team, which will follow if ownership and/or the location of the club change.
