The timing feels right that the tentative details of the St. Louis Cardinals spring training plans for 2011 have come to light on the day following the end of the disappointing 2010 regular season.
Based on the tentative schedule below, the Cardinals will begin their 2011 spring schedule of 31 games in 29 days on Monday, February 28 in Jupiter, Florida. Their opponent will be their Roger Dean Stadium partner, the Florida Marlins.
The Cardinals will play 19 of their 31 games in their friendly Jupiter surroundings, whether as home team or the “away” team vs. the Marlins. Visiting club highlights will be three American League foes, the Boston Red Sox on March 8, the Detroit Tigers on March 11 and the Minnesota Twins the next day on the 12th. The Cardinals will also travel to their home parks for single games.
The schedule features three split game days, on March 3, 19 and 29, with just one planned day off, on March 22. Not surprisingly, almost half the Cardinals’ spring games, 14 of the 31, are against the two nearest clubs, the Marlins and the New York Mets, who train in Port St. Lucie.
To complete the schedule, the Cardinals face the Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves four times each, two home and two away, and the Houston Astros three times. Game times for most will be 1:05 P.M. Eastern. Season ticket sales are underway with single-game tickets available starting on January 22.
Over the winter months, I will fill in the details of the spring training broadcast schedule at The Cardinal Nation blog. That includes television, radio and satellite information as it trickles out from a wide variety of sources.
November 11 update: St. Louis will return to Springfield, MO to take on their Double-A club on the evening of March 29, 2011.
December 3 update: The Cardinals have announced the official schedule. Times have been added below. Only one Florida game will be in the evening, in Viera on March 25.
Cardinals’ pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to Jupiter on February 13 and conduct their first workout on February 14. The remainder of the Cardinals players are scheduled to report February 18 with their first full-squad workout the next day.
One open question remains. One version of the schedule had the Cards playing in both Jupiter (afternoon) and Springfield (evening) on March 29 while some sources indicated the Jupiter game would be canceled. Apparently the former is correct, with later schedules showing split squad games that day.
The Cardinal Nation will also publish the full slate of Cardinals minor league spring training contests when available, as we do each year for our subscribers.
January 27 update: Spring minor league schedules now posted.
